An old man and woman from La Digue island went to work on a neighbouring island, Marianne. One day during the Southeast monsoon, they decided to go fishing at a particular spot called ‘Trou Koumba’ (Koumba hole). They caught plenty of fish, but the next day, it was as if ‘Trou koumba’ was calling to the old lady. In spite of her husband’s counsel not to go fishing again, she went to the same place, and was swept out to sea. Her husband sang a lamentation throughout the search, but she was never found.
